Also after disabling the AC97 in BIOS go to my computer -> right click -> properties -> hardware -> device manager -> Sound, video and game controllers and remove or disable the AC97 drivers if you wish, to use the Sound Blaster. This should stop your crashing and allow you to use the Sound Blaster.

You need to get the *YAMAHA* drivers for the Yamaha 744 sound chip. You do not need the Intel 810 AC97 sound drivers and they won't work. The drivers at my board's section at msi.com.tw are the Hyperion 4.51/s. I have installed the Via AC97 drivers which were available at msi.com.tw, which wasn't easy. Just as a curiousity today, I downloaded the official Realtek AC97 drivers to see if they were any better than the nForce drivers. I was a little uncertain they would work at all. To my amazement those drivers not only worked but also delievered the power I had yet to harness from this motherboard.

Seriously though, I understand your hesitation, but I'm telling you, if you just jump into CMOS, and go to "integrated Peripherals" and enable both the "Legacy Audio" and "Sound Blaster" (don't change the defaults for I/O or IRQ or anything, they're fine) and then re-install you AC97 drivers, it'll go so smooth
