Their reply: VIA OnChip Audio AC97 drivers for Linux is not available yet, please wait. Yeah right. I think I'll disengage on-board sound and go out and buy a SoundBlaster.

(Yes, you know who you are, the "AC97 sucks" people...) I'm in the same boat. My notebook has a NeoMagic MagicMedia 256ZX combined video and sound chip. SDD does the video. The sound is "PCI / AC97" and there are no OS/2 drivers for it. It sounds simple to get someone to write AC97 drivers. But it's not.

The manual is for the GA7ZX which uses the CT5880 and for the GA7ZX-1 which uses the AC97. You should only install the sound drivers for one of the devises.

Some of these boards however were released with AC97 codec's instead: some Via VT686, some Realtek. Might be you've misidentified the chip? What we have found is that whatever the AC97 codec is 'supposed' to be, the Realtek ones work better. (!!!!!), Obviously if there is a CT5880 on board then putting AC97 drivers
